Running along the Slovenian
border in the far north east of the country, Friuli is one of Italy's most high
profile and revered wine producing regions. Led by some inspired and thoughtful
producers the region has embraced modern winemaking over the last 30 years and
become internationally known for the production of exceptional aromatic white
wines. Chief among the varietals are Pinot Grigio, Malvasia, Friulano,
Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Picolit and Ribolla Gialla.
As a general rule the best
white wines of Friuli exhibit intense aromatics matched by intense flavours on
the palate that are accompanied by great textural elements. The whole effect
communicates serious and striking white wines of great
character.
