Sangiovese
is one of the most famous of Italy's "noble" grape varieties and makes it
greatest stake for glory in Tuscany, where it is the main constituent of famed
wines like Chianti Classico, Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di
Montelpulciano. It is also grown to good effect in California and Australia,
although it would be fair to say that neith of these countries are yet to
achieve the depth and complexity of the best coming out of Tuscany.
In
character the grape delivers wines of dark and morello cherry flavour and
aromatics alongside dried herb, liquorice and persistent drying tannins.
The tannins make the wine the perfect cleansing agent to grilled
meat and game dishes.
