I have never tasted so many extraordinarily rich, concentrated, massive wines so high in tannin and extract, yet with such precision, definition, and freshness. It is clearly a singular vintage that should evolve into one of the great vintages of Bordeaux.
Given the unprecedented degree of hype surrounding 2005, everyone is concerned about prices. It is safe to assume that the first growths, super-seconds, and a few other limited production cuvées that are in great demand will be priced in the stratosphere, yet as Bordeaux history has demonstrated, those prices will appear inexpensive 10-20 years from now. However, there is so much good wine in 2005, even from less than prestigious châteaux that are not exactly the darlings of speculators, that there will be an ocean of very high quality wine available at reasonable prices.
ROBERT PARKER, April, 2006
Tasting the 2005 red wines from the bottle confirmed that this is the greatest vintage produced during my 30-year career. A great majority of the wines are far superior from bottle than they were from cask, confirming the quality of this remarkable vintage. Perhaps the most amazing revelation in my tastings was how sweet the tannins have become. Combined with the wines’ concentration levels, remarkable precision as well as freshness, it augers well for wines that will last for an incredibly long time. Yet I believe many wines will be drinkable earlier than my barrel tastings suggested. ROBERT PARKER, April 2008
Indeed the great advantage of this vintage is its consistency throughout the ranks. It is not just the first growths that made great wines in 2005. My tastings of this vintage en primeur back in April 2006 suggested that there would be some quite delicious wines at third, fourth and fifth growth level and below. So I was particularly keen to re-taste the wines now that they have had some time to settle in to bottle. Some of the best wine bargains in the world are 2005s from much less glamorous châteaux with the simple Bordeaux appellation.
The one word that kept cropping up in my tasting notes was ‘succulent’. These wines, made from beautifully ripe grapes, have the most lovely juicy fruit yet also great freshness - a vital factor if a wine is to be appetising - but no shortage of tannins to keep them going for a long life. The great distinguishing mark of the 2005s is that in the best, wines the tannins are wonderfully ripe so that instead of these young wines tasting tough and astringent, they envelope the palate in velvety fruit until only on the finish does the taster notice really rather a lot of tannin buried under there.
JANCIS ROBINSON, November 2007
This is the final opportunity to purchase wine from this wonderful The wines listed below are those remaining after we purchased direct out of Bordeaux two years ago at opening (first tranche) prices and, while the wines are not at original indent pricing, they still represent exceptional buying, particularly considering the remarkable price rises in the intervening 18 months. Indeed prices continue to rise and will keep doing so, particularly as reviews of the finished wines are, in a lot of examples, higher than the initial reviews.
