Yarra Valley 2010 vintage mini Expo
After the heartbreak of bushfires in 2009 (and, as it turns out, rain in
2011) 2010 has turned out to be a great vintage in the Yarra Valley. This
can be seen in recent wine show results where Yarra Pinots have been scooping
the pool, most notably with the Phi Pinot Noir 2010 very recently winning the
trophy for the best wine at this year's National Wine Show in Canberra; the
first time this has gone to a Pinot!
There are a number of
terrific and mainly single vineyard 2010s in this offer including
wines from Mac Forbes, de Bortoli and Phi (we have a limited amount of this
award winning Pinot) Thick as Thieves, Bird on a Wire, Coldstream Hills and
Serrrat. PRINCE WINE STORE
The 2010s are only just
starting to come onto the market and in southern Victoria it is an absolute
cracker. Lovers of chardonnay and pinot noir from the Yarra Valley and
Mornington Peninsula can rub their hands with glee. A textbook grape growing
season resulted in pinot noirs that many winemakers have hailed as the best
they've ever seen.
The Yarra , in particular, was overdue a good
vintage after suffering heat, drought, frost, bushfires and rain, so 2010 stands
out like a beacon on a hill. At the Yarra Valley Wine Program, an
intensive two-day tasting and educational seminar, the 2010 vintage was
highlighted. Two of the six tutored tastings were devoted solely to 2010 pinot
noir.
Do the wines live up to the hype? Comprehensively: perhaps the pick
is Phi, the partnership between De Bortoli and Shelmerdine. The chief
winemaker at De Bortoli, Steve Webber, savs this is the best Yarra pinot he has
'ever seen. It has a wonderful array of aromas from various spices to red and
dark berry fruit s, full of detail and beauty. It dances on the tongue with
nervy acidity enlivening its rich and generous yet fine and subtle flavours,
which continue to expand almost endlessly on a very long
finish.
........The great thing about 2010 is you won't need to let a
decade roll by before you can say that it's a truly great year. We know it's
good, it's on sale now and we also know 20 11 is one of the poorest vintages in
living memory. It's a good time to restock
the cellar. HUON
