So, as with every vintage, the two questions for you as consumers that take precedence over everything else always are:  should I buy the wines and if so, how much of them?  The best wines are wonderfully refreshing, transparent and graceful with moderately firm tannic spines where the all-important element of balance is supplemented by good but not high acidities.  Before I offer more detail, the short answer is yes on both accounts that the 2016s deserve a place in your cellars and there is no reason not to go heavy – I for one will be buying all that I can afford and find. More specifically, there are two aspects that I absolutely love about the 2016s which are those of the crystalline transparency to the underlying terroirs coupled with their refreshing drinkability.  One just feels like drinking the 2016s, in fact it’s hard not to like them. BURGHOUND

Welcome to Prince Wine Store’s third annual Burgundy Grand Cru Horizontal. This has become one of, if not THE Australian wine event of the year for those lucky enough to be able to attend the extravaganza.

This event offers a rare opportunity to taste all the Grand Cru vineyards alongside one another. The horizontal system also levels the playing field with all the wines being from a single vintage. This year we will take an in depth look at the remarkable 2016s, a year that delivers wines of remarkable depth, structure and wonderful clarity.

Over the past 18 months we have painstakingly collated a collection of wines from the great Domaines of Burgundy, particularly challenging this year with the horrendous frosts that ravaged the region in 2016. The list below reads like a who’s who of benchmark producers: Domaine de la Romanee Conti, Domaine Armand Rousseau, Mugneret Gibourg, Thibault Liger-Belair,  Henri Boillot, Clos de Lambrays, Liger Belair, Hubert Lamy, Lucien Le Moine, Dujac, de Vogue, Domaine Faively, Lamarche, Dugat Py, Perrot Minot, Raveneau and Clos de Tart. The list is staggering. Some of these wines are rarely seen in Australia. This is the ultimate experience for any Burg-geek.

This tasting will take place on the Saturday across six sessions commencing at 9am for a 9:30 kick off: beginning with the white wines and the grand crus of the Cote de Beaune. All wines will be served masked but all attendees will be told the communes from which the wines originate. Comprehensive notes will be provided.

Lunch and accompanying wine will be provided on the day along with tea and coffee in each break.

Anyone who has attended this event in the past can attest to the fact that this tasting is one of the greatest wine experiences any serious wine person could ask for and the day is always a remarkable mix of fun and educational. We look forward to it for 364 days of the year, from the moment the previous Horizontal is finished

This event is limited to 18 people, this ensures that there is more than ample wine to go around and that the conversation can flow freely. The total value of the wines on tasting is in excess of $60,000 so for $5595 a head it is remarkable value. As James Halliday, who attended the 2014 Horizontal wrote “a Burgundy masterclass the likes of which I have never previously participated in”

If you would like to attend, please contact Michael McNamara or Alex Wilcox via email: (Michael) [email protected] or (Alex) [email protected] .
