In terms of quality, let me briefly concur with Tanzer regarding the quality of the 2017 whites. My sample size is smaller than his, yet there are some quite brilliant whites that, many growers are beginning to opine, equal or even surpass the haloed 2014s.
The 2017 reds are very good, often excellent, and from time to time, bloody awesome…. The growing season did not leave such a heavy imprimatur upon the wines as others, including 2015 and 2016. Wines are governed more by the DNA of each vineyard and then sculpted by winemakers’ decisions. NEAL MARTIN, Vinous

Our second instalment of our Tutored sessions on the 2017 vintage in Burgundy is something pretty special, at least we think so. On the 16th of October we have convinced Patrick Walsh to host this session. I think many of our customers will be familiar with the great man but for those who don’t know him here is a little recap. Patrick Walsh is a former top Australian Sommelier and general wine guru who began one of this country’s most remarkable import business many years ago.

Paddy, as he is affectionately known (at least by me), is a veritable wealth of information about all things vinous and one of the most gifted communicators in the Aussie wine industry. When you combine a long life time (sorry Paddy) in the wine game with the ability to be able to articulate your knowledge and communicate your topic you have a rare gift, someone who knows what he is on about and can share that love with others in a way that is both highly informative and usually quite entertaining.

The line up of producers on show for this tasting is pretty special and Paddy has pulled out all the stops to highlight why he loves the vintage and also why these producers deserve the attention of every Burgundy collector and fan. The tasting will comprise of four brackets ranging from entry Bourgogne through to Grand Cru with two white producers and two reds. An in depth look at the domaine’s wines from 2017 in a relaxed and semi informal fashion. A guided tour of four great Burgundian estates by the man who knows them best. Included are two of the good and great of Meursault that Patrick looks after for Australia and two of the regions gun red producers.

Domaine Matrot dance to their own tune, the wines here are the epitome of transparency and counter to most of their comrades practices the domaine uses no new wood in the Meursault wines, all barrels are seasoned in their Bourgogne, the concept being that you see as direct a transfer of site to bottle as possible and it works here, lots of wineries talk about expression of terroir but few match Matrot in their unerring ability to capture a site and a season in a get it to bottle. This is a producer I admire greatly.

Latour Giraud is a relative new comer to the Cellarhand Portfolio and one that comes with a lot of hype, justified here. They fall in to the category of “those in the know” estates, a domaine that is eagerly sought after by savvy collectors the world over but perhaps not as well known here in Australia as they should be a no doubt will be soon. They are the kind of white Burg that should appeal to everyone, bright, transparent, elegant and highly detailed with a relaxed sense to them, they come across poised and finessed in the glass. Wines of sophistication but also full of joyous appeal. Latour Giraud’s style seems to be on of easy self-assurance, Meursault that you just want to drink and enjoy, gorgeously enticing things.

Taupenot Merme is an estate that has always performed well but that has undergone something of a remarkable drive towards greatness in recent years. Under the watchful eye of brother and sister combo Virginie and Romain Taupenot this Morey based producer is now a force to be reckoned with in the Cote. The wines today are built on a core of sumptuous fruit and perfumed aromatics. You get a general sense of buoyancy from their offerings today, open and inviting, generous wines that are often accessible in their youth but have a gentle structure which will hold them in good stead in the cellar should that be your bent. If you haven’t seen these wines before or it has been a while they definitely should be on your radar. Burgundy for those who really love to see the essence of the climats shine through in the glass.

Lastly but certainly not least is Jean Tardy, a name well known to fans of the region. Guillaume is one of those young producers who has taken the reigns of a domaine with good holdings and driven it forward in leaps and bounds. Today he is widely regarded as one of the best young producers in the region. His wines are entirely destemmed and often exhibit wonderfully vibrant, sensuous and enticing fruit that would leave many thinking that perhaps they do not have the structure to age, they do but that structure is derived from meticulous attention to extraction and elevage. The resulting wines can be wonderfully approachable and the seriousness of them can be hiding deep within the core of their ebullient natures. As Jasper Morris MW puts it “Domaine Jean Tardy is now recognised as one of the leading producers in the Côte d’Or today” and I agree wholeheartedly.

This promises to be one of the highlights of the 2017 Burgundy campaign and one not to miss for any fan. Tickets are $90 a head, a bargain for this line up. The tasting will kick off at 6:30 and we will aim to finish by 8pm, just in time to pop downstairs to Bellota for dinner. We expect this to fill quickly so please get in early if you are interested in coming.
