Alberto Machetti’s Tenuta del Buon Tempo is an estate I was not previously familiar with. I discovered two beautiful, albeit different, wines from this under-the-radar reality that are definitely worth trying MONICA LARNER

Tenuta Buon Tempo stretches for 26 hectares, 12 of which cultivated as vineyards. About 5 hectares of these are devoted exclusively to Brunello di Montalcino and are located next door to such illustrious estates as Casanova di Neri and Poggio di Sotto.

The vineyards are all situated around the villa and the modern cellar, at an average altitude of 350 m above sea level, with south-easterly exposure overlooking the River Orcia (the southern boundary of the commune) and the Mt Amiata (so important in regulating the temperature of all of Montalcino). The main composition of the soils is Galestro marl and sandstone, with a rich presence of heavy stone and considerable variability even within a very short distance.

While the estate has been around for a while under different ownership the real story here is the new regime and the change of direction in order to base the wines on freshness and vibrancy rather than a heavier less energetic style. This stylistic change can already be seen in the new wines and in yet-to-be released vintages its even more apparent. Apart from the new owners being devoted to this new styling they have added meat to the bones of the concept by employing Attilio Pagli; one Brunello most famous consultants. All these factors make this an estate to watch into the future. Based on the philosophy and the undeniable quality of their terroir they will be one of the emerging stars, if they aren’t already.
