Burgundy Clearance

A unique and exciting offer as there are some great names here on offer at great prices. The list includes, Comte Armand, Bouchard, de Montille, Pousse d’Or and Patrick Piuze.

Well, there is a silver lining to every cloud they say. We have just been offered a selection of wines from one of Australia’s greatest Burgundy importers of things they have excess stock of and at substantially discounted prices. These kinds of things just don’t happen and these kinds of wines just don’t get discounted. Most of them are wines we offered when released over the years and all are from great estates that have been stored in the importers cellars since their arrival.

Each wine has had a very substantial discount applied and we have passed that straight on to you, our customers. In some cases there is reasonable (in the context of Burgundy) quantity available but with many there is only a few bottles.

This really is a unique and exciting offer as there are some great names here on offer at great prices. The list includes, Comte Armand, Bouchard, de Montille, Pousse d’Or and Patrick Piuze.

The list we were offered was much larger but we have picked the eyes out of it for you and we think everything in here offers a genuine bargain with a few serious collectors pieces amongst them. Really quite a remarkable list.

As always if you would like to place an offer please feel free to contact me directly. 0400 653 569 – email [email protected] or order online at www.princewinestore.com.au

Patrick Piuze

The only thing truly original in the world of wine is the underlying terroir and I have nothing else interesting to add. Anyone can copy anyone else’s techniques so what else is there to make great wines? I believe the answer is simple: Terroir. I want to work only with the fruit from old vines and even then, only old vines that are planted exclusively within the original boundaries of Chablis. If I respect these things, it will be almost impossible to make bad wine. PATRICK PIUZE

“there is good definition of place. The dry conditions drove vines to drink deeper down in the soil profile.” PATRICK PIUZE, on his 2018s

Other producers who have delivered strong quality in both 2017 and 2018 are Patrick Piuze, whose extensive range of wines speak clearly to terroir in both vintages. NICK STOCK, jamessuckling.com

The irrepressible Patrick Piuze, who has worked with Jean-Marie Guffens at Verget and Jean-Marc Brocard (see both herein), struck out on his own in 2008 to found an eponymous négociant. Piuze forcefully forswears corrections of any kind, which includes chaptalization (unless absolutely necessary), enzymes, acidification as well as new wood (he uses 6 to 8 year old wood at present with some stainless, depending on the wine in question)…. these are wines to buy in quantity as they’re inexpensive while offering generally fine quality BURGHOUND

Patrick Piuze is the “bad boy” of Chablis. I don’t mean that in a pejorative sense. I am sure he is perfectly behaved at all times. But he conveys a charming sense of rebelliousness, perhaps stemming from his Canadian roots that confer an outsider status I think he enjoys. Let’s face it, his heritage has not prevented him from securing contracts on some choice parcels around Chablis. Sometimes I compare Piuze to Jean-Luc Thunévin in the sense that he is quite content to upset the established order. Piuze is an exemplar of a winemaker who eschews the notion of calling vines his own and instead focuses on establishing long-term relationships and contracts with those who can offer him propitious terroir. In that sense, you could think of his approach not dissimilar to that of Eben Sadie in South Africa. And it seems to work. Piuze has gained a loyal following in countries around the world. As usual we descended down to his barrel cellar that, I am sure, it backs on to that of Vincent Dauvissat, such as their proximity albeit on opposite sides of the road.

This is a comprehensive portfolio that almost atomizes Chablis into individual vineyard expressions. Piuze is renowned for both cutting deals with owners of propitious vineyards and his obsessive, occasionally maverick approach. He does what he feels is right, even if it contradicts the consensus. Shelf Price $95.00
$95.00
ONLY BOTTLED IN MAGNUMS
From north-facing plots, adjacent to Vaillons and Forets. Quite exotic with fresh, ripe apricot and mango aromas, leading to a full-ish palate that’s really fleshy and packed with flavor. Open and so delicious. NICK STOCK, jamessuckling.com

The 2018 Chablis Terroir de Chablis shows the more exotic, tropical side of the year - qualities that are further amplified by clay-rich soils in this parcel that give the wine its breadth. Creamy and generous, the 2018 will drink well upon release. Dried orchard fruit and flinty notes add character. This distinctive wine really stands out among the village bottlings in the range. Bouchard Pere et Fils

This legendary estate can trace its roots back to 1731 however has not been family owned since the mid 90s when it was purchased by Champagne house Henriot. The wines are still made by Philippe Prost who has been with the company since 1978. Bouchard’s total holdings comprise 130 hectares, including 12ha of grand crus and 74ha of premier crus, which makes them the largest vineyard owners in the Cote d’Or which is perhaps why they remain one of the most regular sources of comparatively great value yet also produce consistently excellent wines, especially their whites. Bouchard Chevalier Montrachet La Cabotte 2006

Shelf Price $1,450.00
$1,450.00
Here the aromatic profile is less elegant than that of the Chevalier but actually more complex and as it virtually always is, it seems to combine most of the elegance of a classic Chevalier with most of the power and depth of a classic Montrachet though from one vintage to another, it can reflect more of the character of one than the other. In 2006, this is more Montrachet than Chevalier. Either way, it's a terrific wine and also more than worth buying if you can find it. (96) “DON’T MISS” BURGHOUND

Bouchard Chevalier Montrachet La Cabotte 2008

Shelf Price $890.00
$890.00
There really isn't much to modify since my last review was only a few months ago, except to say that if anything, my score might be one point too conservative as this is going to be a great, great Chevalier. The original note from Issue 39 was: Discreet wood sets off a slightly riper but otherwise similar nose to the "straight" Chevalier, which leads to bigger, richer and fuller well-muscled and impressively scaled flavors that culminate in a powerful and beautifully textured finish of simply stunning length. Despite the weight and obvious heft, there is absolutely no sense of heaviness as the underlying minerality imparts a real sense of lift. In a word, terrific. (96) BURGHOUND

Bouchard Chevalier Montrachet La Cabotte 2009

Shelf Price $935.00
$935.00
This is slightly riper than the straight Chevalier with a similar nose but with more yellow fruit and spice influence that is followed by rich, serious, broad-shouldered and intensely stony flavors that possess a positively gorgeous sense of underlying tension that adds energy to the massive, explosive, long and palate staining finish. This is a big yet impeccably well-balanced wine that should age for years. (95) BURGHOUND

Bouchard Chevalier Montrachet La Cabotte 2016 1500ml

Shelf Price $2,800.00
$2,800.00
This too is so firmly reduced that the nose is unreadable. There is by contrast good freshness and a lovely sense of verve to the dense and serious imposingly-scaled flavors that possess ample muscle and minerality on the powerful and driving finish that delivers outstanding length. In any given vintage La Cabotte can be more Montrachet or more Chevalier in character but in 2016, I would describe it more akin to Montrachet. I would further note that while this should age effortlessly, there is so much mid-palate fat that it could be enjoyed after only 5-ish years. (95) BURGHOUND

Bouchard Chevalier Montrachet 2006

Shelf Price $830.00
$830.00
Prost was, justifiably, extremely proud of this wine and observed that it may be the best "straight" Chevalier that he's ever made. Not surprisingly, this is a good deal more elegant than the Bâtard with gorgeously pure floral and white fruit, stone and subtle spice aromas that seamlessly merge into the almost painfully intense and vibrant flavors that, like the Perrières, possess crystalline purity and huge length. This is a knockout Chevy and if you can find it, don't miss it. (96) BURGHOUND

Bouchard Montrachet 2011

Shelf Price $1,400.00
$1,400.00
This is aromatically quite similar at this early stage to the La Cabotte. There is an extraordinarily powerful effort with impressive mid-palate density and so much dry extract that it imparts a sappy, even seductive texture to the mouth coating flavors that terminate in a breathtakingly long finish. Moreover, as good as the La Cabotte is, and it is indeed exceptionally good, there is simply no contest between the two wines as there is just another dimension present here. In sum, this beautifully well-balanced Monty is an absolute knockout! (96) BURGHOUND

Bouchard Montrachet 2012

Shelf Price $1,350.00
$1,350.00
Bright, pale yellow.  Brooding aromas of apple, cinnamon and white flowers.  Fat, broad and sweet; rich in dry extract but very young and unevolved today.  The back end displays enticing saline minerality but also a distinctly phenolic, even tannic impression.  No shortage of acidity here. STEPHEN TANZER

Bouchard Montrachet 2013

Shelf Price $1,370.00
$1,370.00
If for some reason you're tempted to try a bottle in the next year I would strongly suggest that this be decanted for 30 minutes first. Otherwise there is excellent intensity, muscle and power to the concentrated, mineral-driven and broad-shouldered flavors that already display superb complexity and simply huge length. At the same time this is presently very tight and the austerity of the linear finish confirms that this is very likely to require 12 to 15 years to realize its full potential. BURGHOUND

Healthy bright yellow. Aromas of apple, smoky minerals, white pepper and resin. Hugely rich and dense yet at the same time dry and weightless, with a vanillin oak component that has not yet harmonized with the wine's fruit. This pure, complete, large-scaled Montrachet is very reserved today. STEPHEN TANZER

Bouchard Montrachet 2014

Shelf Price $1,550.00
$1,550.00

Though there is a hint of unabsorbed SO2 present on the otherwise expressive and actually quite elegant nose that features notes of lemon rind, spiced pear, white peach and plenty of floral scents. The serious and striking rich flavors are imposingly scaled as well as impressively concentrated and while obvious overtly powerful, they are also seductively textured before culminating in an explosive yet impeccably well-balanced finish. As is usually the case, this is a big but refined Montrachet that will require a full decade plus to arrive at its full maturity. (96) 'Don't Miss' BURGHOUND

(just finished its malo): Clove, flowers, iodine, crushed stone, sea salt, spearmint and lavender on the high-pitched nose. Utterly silky and fine-grained but more restrained today than the Cabottes. Perhaps a bit less complex on the palate in the early going than the Chevalier-Montrachet but already shows strong stony minerality. The superb, very smooth finish builds impressively and lingers. Here too the wood treatment is anything but subtle though it stops just short of completely overshadowing the exuberantly spicy plum liqueur and earth-scented nose. There is good drive and even better detail if not the impressive concentration to the medium weight flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the ever-so-slightly warm and very firm finish. Again, my predicted range assumes that the wood treatment will be successfully absorbed over time and note as well that plenty of patience will be necessary. (94) 'Sweet Spot, Outstanding' BURGHOUND

Healthy dark red. Aromas of kirsch, black raspberry and dark chocolate are lifted by an element of pungent minerality. A distinct step up in sweetness and depth from the preceding samples, at once broad and fine-grained, showing excellent clarity to its silky flavors of dark fruits, spices and minerals. Really saturates the palate with flavor and echoes on the long finish, with the suave tannins glistening on the aftertaste. STEPHEN TANZER

Once again prominent wood stops just short of dominating the overtly spicy nose of cassis, black cherry, lavender and warm earth scents. Copious wood influence all but drowns out the menthol and plum liqueur aromas. This is a big wine with exceptional richness, concentration and muscle where superb mid-palate density helps to persuade that the wood has a reasonably good chance of being successfully integrated over time. This isn't quite as complex as the Clos de Vougeot but it is every bit as long. My range offers the benefit of the doubt that the wood will not be an issue as this ages. BURGHOUND

Here too there is plenty of wood influence surrounding the spice, earth, game, cassis and plum suffused nose. There is fine richness to the velvety and impressively concentrated broad-shouldered flavors that possess a seductive mouth feel though the firm, robust and muscular finish make it clear that this is built-to-age. This will require more patience than the Clos de Vougeot but it is not so backward that it could not be popped after 7 to 8 years of bottle age. BURGHOUND

Moderate wood and menthol nuances serve as a less than neutral backdrop for the gamy, spicy and very ripe aromas of dark pinot fruit liqueur-like aromas. There is fine volume and outstanding intensity to the big-bodied and powerful flavors that possess flat out superb concentration thanks to the abundance of palate drenching sap that also serves to buffer the firm core of ripe tannins on the hugely long and wonderfully complex finish. While the underlying raw material is certainly present such that this will require 15 to 20 years to arrive at its full apogee, the sap is such that I suspect that it will allow this to be enjoyed after only 7 to 8 years of cellar time. This is one to look for provided that you have at least moderate patience. “Don’t Miss” (95) BURGHOUND

Comte Armand

The modern era began under Pascal Marchand (whose first vintage was 1985), followed by Benjamin Leroux and now Paul Zinetti, Benjamin’s second-in-command. Each has left their mark: Pascal Marchand elevated the domaine, making it the greatest Pommard estate, and Benjamin Leroux oversaw conversion to biodynamics (certified from 2005).

Since 2014, Paul Zinetti has been at the helm, and a subtle but discernible change is underway. The Clos des Epeneaux’s famous dense, rich, tannic composition, so individual and impressive, is being gently moderated towards a wine that will be accessible a little earlier, while in no way undermining the ageability of one of Burgundy’s great terroirs. JASPER MORRIS MW

“There are 29 barrels of Clos des Epéneaux in 2016 and 70 in 2017,” he continued. “But I like the 2016 that has good energy, salinity with drinkability.” I found immense promise within the component parts of the Clos des Epéneaux, which in my opinion has improved steadily over the last two decades. Now there is much more refinement and terroir expression that will doubtlessly be enhanced by the higher quality of vin de presse. NEAL MARTIN, The Wine Advocate

A background whiff of wood easily allows the earthy yet quite pretty aromas of plum, violet, dark cherry and soft spice nuances to shine. The mouth feel of the slightly bigger and richer flavors is also admirably sleek while delivering excellent length on the mouth coating and well-balanced finish. This is perhaps a bit less structured than is usually the case as it should be reasonably approachable young if that's your preference. “Sweet Spot, Outstanding” BURGHOUND

The 2016 Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Epeneaux contains 10% whole-bunch fruit. I tasted from two cuvées, one from the young vines and one from the old. The young vines has clean and pure black cherry, red plum and lightly blueberry fruit that conveys a sense of energy. The palate is well balanced with succulent ripe black fruit, very fine tannin, a taut line of acidity but real complexity and tension from start to finish. I love the harmony and effortlessness of these younger vines. The cuvée from older vines demonstrated more black fruit with traces of undergrowth, a little more rondeur with impressive depth and structure on the persistent, marine/oyster shell-tinged finish. This has enormous potential and may challenge the supremacy of the 2015. (95) NEAL MARTIN

(the 5+ ha Clos is composed of approximately 80% Petits Epenots and 20% Grands Epenots; the vine ages run from 18 to 75+ years of age; this will be bottled only in magnum) An exceptionally fresh and relatively elegant nose features notes of various red berries, earth and a discreet spiciness. There is a beguiling mouth feel to the medium-bodied, concentrated and powerful flavors that are shaped by very firm yet ripe tannins on the palate coating finish that is sneaky long. 2030+ Note that the suggested initial drinking window is based on magnum format. BURGHOUND

Now for the main attraction that dominates Domaine Comte Armand: the 2012 Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Epeneaux. There is no second wine (usually labelled village or premier cru) from this monopole this year and due to diminished quantities the final blend welcomed its younger vines that in any case have now reached a respectable 25 year of age. I tasted two cuvees according to geological profile: the lower reaches of fragmented rock high in iron oxide that tend to give tannic wines and the higher reaches of shallower soil and a proliferation of smaller cracks that tends to give more mineral-driven, elegant wine. The first cuvee from ferrous soils has a very refined bouquet with crystalline dark cherry and cassis fruit that come loaded with minerals, yet it is not a powerful bouquet, rather one that creeps up on you by stealth – seduction by the back door. The palate has a chalky, assertive, grippy entry with splendid weight and breadth. It does not fan out towards the finish like the 2009 or 2010, but stays very linear and focused, leaving a residue of minerals in its wake. You can sense the power, but Benjamin has this cuvee on a tight leash. The second, from fragmented rock, has a slightly more open nose and red fruit. It is sweeter and more feminine with a lithe finish. The blend of the two is very harmonious, the light blend tempering the more boisterous cuvee from the upper reaches, the elegance enhanced by the combination of the two. This will be fascinating once bottled. Readers should note that for the first time, the Clos des Epeneaux will be bottled in magnums only. NEIL MARTIN, The Wine Advocate

Pousse d'Or

What is now the 17 hectare Domaine de la Pousse d’Or has its nucleus in two domaines which were grouped together in 1964. It was then 13 ha. and the land comprised several of the choicest parcels, all of them of significant area, of these two long-standing estates, whose histories can be traced back into the 18th century or beyond. It was created through the efforts of one of France’s leading amateur gastronomes and oenophiles of the post-war era, and had at its helm from then until his untimely death in 1997, in Gérard Potel, one of Burgundy’s most respected wine-makers.

there have been significant additions to the portfolio; into Corton and Puligny-Montrachet, and more recently a major acquisition in Chambolle-Musigny. Pousse d’Or is now a very important estate. CLIVE COATES MW

La Pousse d’Or is located a few kilometres from Beaune, in the commune of Volnay. The 13 hectares of vineyard are spread among the communes of Volnay, Pommard and Santenay, each producing distinctive and stylish wines. JASPER MORRIS MW

De Montille

Domaine de Montille is a first class Côte de Beaune domaine and one which is producing some of the purest expressions of Pinot Noir to be found in Burgundy today.

Today the domaine is run by his son Etienne. The winemaking is traditional – partial destemming followed by a relatively long maceration period. The wines are aged in oak barriques (20-30% new) and are bottled unfiltered. These are wonderfully elegant, harmonious wines that require at least five years bottle ageing to show at their very best.
The domaine has recently been considerably extended by purchases of vineyards in Beaune, Corton, and (from 2005) the Cote de Nuits, including some marvellous Vosne Romanee Les Malconsorts. JASPER MORRIS MW
