One of Spain’s most important and influential producers, Alvaro Palacios is making stunning wines in Priorat and Bierzo. They’re expensive, yes, but they’re thrilling with it.

His family come from Rioja: he’s one of the nine kids of the owner of Bodega Palacios Remondo. But rather than work with the family domain, he wanted to do things a bit differently. JAMIE GOODE, Wine Anorak

Telmo Rodriguez is one of Spain’s most celebrated winemakers. As well as looking after the wines at family property Remelluri (in Rioja), he’s making a wide range of wines from all over Spain under his own name. These are tremendously appealing wines: they are modern, but still show regional typicity, they are beautifully packaged, and they offer value for money.

The recent revival in the Spanish wine industry has, in no small part, been dominated by two visionary and talented winemakers, Alvaro Palacios and Telmo Rodriguez. Certainly in the eyes of the wine consumer outside Spain these two men have become emblematic of all that is great about modern Spanish wine.

Both men come from a traditional wine environment (their family respective family estates), both have redefined the wine style of those estate’s and both have then looked further afield to other areas of Spain to rediscover and unlock the potential of those regions.

The idea for this offer was borne out of a recent tasting which featured all of the following wines and highlighted just how talented and influential these two winemakers have been over the past decade. While we’ve billed it as a “taste-off” the idea is really to highlight their talents as well as the diversity and ever-growing quality of Spanish wine. Moreover, Philip, Alex and myself thought these were some of the most exciting wines we had seen in some time. As such each wine is highly recommended!
