Vintage Port 2007: One of the greats years!

Including wines from Fonseca, Croft, Warre’s & Dow’s

My views on 2007? It seems to be a pretty spectacular vintage, with very fresh, pure fruit characteristics. Many of these Ports will be approachable young, but the best ones also have the potential to age for 50 years. I could buy a few cases of these wines and drink them for the rest of my life. JAMIE GOODE, Wine Anorak

No, the 2007s have an unerring sensuality to them, silky and seamless, ports that I am reluctant to say will be approachable when young. If you like hedonistic young port then feel free to drink them over the next five or six years to revel in their sweet nubile fruit. Me? I would prefer to cellar them for at least twenty years and seek out the nuances and subtleties that only time can sculpt.
NEIL MARTIN

Vintage Port is one of the world's rarest wines, made on average only once every three or four years. Only about four dozen producers make this long-lived fortified wine in a given year.
JAMES SUCKLING, Wine Spectator

Apart from the fact I think Vintage Port can deliver some of the most hedonistic, complex and idiosyncratic tasting experiences in the world of wine, I think I also love it because it’s a style of wine so out-of-step with the technophile wines of today. To some it’s an anachronism in our temperate times but to me it is an enduring symbol of why wine captures your imagination in the first place.

Of the 2007 Vintage Ports we have already had the opportunity to taste it is clearly a remarkable vintage. On declaration last year, at the height of the GFC, the wines sold out from the bodegas in record time and have already become super-limited in smaller markets like Australia.

It is not a vintage that easily compares to those that have gone before – a cooler and rainier season put pressure on selection processes – but the wines tend to have the intensity and depth of fruit accompanied by lovely fragrant nuances uncommon in younger ports. The underlying material is layered and rich and the structure is there to hold these wines for the next few decades. Certainly if you have a child born in 2007, putting some down will bring rich rewards.

We have tiny amounts of many of these wines and we highly recommend them so please get in quick if you would like to grab some for the cellar.

Cheers

Michael McNamara
