Andries began his sojourn through the world of wine after wagging architecture school to drink booze at his local Fine Wine Store. He promptly gave up on architecture, and moved to Margaret River to tend the vines at Moss Wood.

He had caught the wine bug, and the only effective treatment would be to fumigate his brain with a degree in Oenology in South Australia. While studying in Adelaide, Andries made a living by working at The Universal Wine Bar, East End Cellars, and the vineyard at Ashton Hills.

After uni, Andries did three vintages at Brokenwood in the hunter Valley, before returning to WA to work at Picardy in Pemberton as assistant winemaker. It was here, over a grapevine, that he met his beautiful and intelligent wife Yoko. They then spent a season in Central Otago in NZ, managing a vineyard and shooting rabbits, before returning to South Australia for Andries to take up a vintage position at Shaw and Smith.

Eventually, the West beckoned and Andries became assistant winemaker at Plantagenet Wines in Mount Barker, where he stayed for four years (including a quick jaunt over to Italy to pump out a vintage at Fattoria Zerbina) until taking over as Chief Winemaker at Willoughby Park Wines in Denmark, WA.

Sadly, the winery was closed and Andries was made redundant after three years. Andries was quickly snapped up by Howard Park as their Denmark site Winemaker, but sadly, after a year the winery was closed and all winemaking moved to the Margaret River mothership and Andries was made redundant (again!). Currently Andries is working at Harewood Estate in Denmark.

Fed up with all the sadness and the winery closing and the redundancy, Andries and Yoko decided to go it alone and make wine for themselves, put the fun back into winemaking, and thus, Brave New Wine was born.

Andries and Yoko now make wines from the Great Southern region in WA using; a big ceramic egg, fancy oak, natural ferments, a light touch, a positive attitude, and the best possible fruit they can get their hands on. They live in a rambling mill house with two crazy kids, a pair of mongrel dogs, and a small flock of heritage chooks.

Brave New Wine
Brave New Wine is an adventure in wine by husband and wife, Andries & Yoko. While working towards owning their own vineyard, they source fruit from high quality sites in the Great Southern. They source fruit which is expressive of place, with a preference for organic/biodynamic or at least sustainably managed vineyards, then apply as much fun, shenanigans, sweat and tears as possible to produce idiosyncratic, textural, fun, tasty wines.
