Flametree, owned by the Towner family (John, Liz, Rob and Annie), has had extraordinary success since its first vintage in 2007. The usual practice of planting a vineyard and then finding someone to make the wine was turned on its head: a state-of-the-art winery was built, and grape purchase agreements signed with growers in the region. Show success was topped by the winning of the Jimmy Watson Trophy with its 2007 Cabernet Merlot. If all this were not enough, Flametree secured the services of winemaker Cliff Royle. JAMES HALLIDAY

Flamtetree started ambitiously and hasn’t slowed since it began in 2007. With gun winemaker and all-round top bloke Cliff Royle at the helm of the winemaking team the gongs keep coming and the rave reviews roll endlessly in. Cliff is not a new hand in Margs, he spent a decade or more running things at Voyager before moving over to Flametree. During his time making wines in the region he has been named as Winemaker of the Year in Winestate and Gourmet Wine, he is a respected judge in the show circuit and his wines have garnered a swathe of awards including the coveted Jimmy Watson Trophy. Most importantly his wines are sensational and capture what the region is capable of today. ROSCOE
