The Chardonnay by Farr comes from the same site as the Sangreal Pinot Noir. It’s an exposed, hungry north-facing slope of red soil over limestone, planted in 1994. The fruit is picked by hand and whole-bunch pressed. All the solids are collected and chilled before being put to French oak barrels (30% new). A natural fermentation occurs over the next two to three weeks at cool temperatures. After fermentation, a bit of stirring helps start malolactic fermentation.
Gorgeous, integrated nose of classy oak over white peach, fresh pineapple and lemon, with grilled nuts. Immediately revs with power and verve on the palate. Medium-bodied, slippery textured, sleek, oak there but in lovely balance. Very good, integrated length and immediately ready to return for another sip. NICK FARR

Not a lot of fanfare but a pure chardonnay, of impact.It flies close to perfection. It delivers white peach and pear, custard apple and high spice flavours in the purest of forms. There’s a mealy, toasty, flinty character flying thereabouts but it never quite settles or overtly reveals; part of the wine’s charm, not to mention quality. This is quite simply a chardonnay for chardonnay lovers. It puts many a foot right and not a single foot wrong. It’s a glittering one. (95) CAMPBELL MATTINSON, The Wine Front
