Rhone red Selection Pack 2017

Rhone red Selection Pack 2017
Selected by Alex Wilcox

September mixed dozen selection is all about Rhone wines and Rhone inspired wines. Containing only reds, the selection also doubles as a winter warming survival kit for these cold winter nights. This pack has 6 wines inspired by Syrah form the Northern Rhone and six inspired by the Grenache blends of the south.

The Rhone Valley was established as a wine region as early as 4BC by the Greeks, and later by the Romans. The vineyards are located on both sides of the river between Vienne and Avignon, just south of Lyon. The Northern and Southern Rhone are unique, each with vastly different geography, climate, soils and grape varieties, but share one thing in common - the Rhone River. On the Northern Side, steep and terraced hillsides produce long lasting, full bodied and powerful, but also elegant in equal measure. In the North Shiraz is king.

Showcasing the Northern style here is from France - Ogier Syrah 2015, Cave du Tain Syrah 2015 and from Australia the Very good value Rocky Gully Shiraz 2015 from the Great Southern Region of Western Australia, East Lake Shiraz 2013 from just outside Canberra, Bird on a Wire 2014 from the Yarra Valley and the great drinking Demi Heathcote Syrah 2016 from Syrahmi.

As the Rhone River stretches out and moves to the South, Grenache becomes king, and other varieties also come to the fore. Here the wines have a generosity and plushness, in the pack from France we have Charvin Vote du Rhone 2015, Ogier Cote du Rhone Le Temps 2015, Rive Droite Cote du Rhone 2016 and the Guigal Cote Du Rhone 2013 which straddles both the North and the South in style. From Australia, we have two great value Barossa wines the Miss Harry GSM from Hewitson and the Head Red GSM 2016.

I hope this a pack that you will enjoy as selection but also a great opportunity to identify your favourite winter drinking Rhone Style red that you can buy for the cellar.

Cheers
