Possessing a slightly modern sheen, the stunning 2012 Côte Rôtie Les Elotins is 100% Syrah, from schist soils, that spent 26 months in 1- to 2-year-old barrels. Medium to full-bodied, ripe and voluptuously textured, it thrills with its black and blue fruits, violets, sweet oak and spice-like aromas and flavors. Drink it anytime over the coming decade or more. This small, family estate, run by Christophe Billon, produces a solid Condrieu and two Côte Rôties, both of which come from the schist soils of the northern part of the appellation. The entry-level Les Elotins is a blend of different parcels, and the top cuvee, the La Brocarde, is a single-vineyard release. Both see small-barrel aging, with the Les Elotins aged in 1- to 2-year-old barrels and the La Brocharde aged in 100% new, which shows. Both are impressive wines. JEB DUNNUCK
