This is also aromatically reticent to the point of being all but mute though again determined swirling finally reveals an abundance of floral, earth, spice and wet stone nuances on the dark berry fruit liqueur scents. I love the mouth feel of the mineral-driven, powerful and broad-shouldered flavors that possess superb mid-palate concentration along with the same almost painful intensity of the Mazoyères on the sappy and massively long finale. As it usually is this is a big, even massive wine yet the balance is impeccable. Note well however that this is old school and will need every bit of 20 years to divulge its full, and considerable, potential. BURGHOUND
(from 65-year-old vines; production for the grand crus was generally around 20 hectoliters per hectare in 2013, according to Dugat; 100% vendange entier): Very dark red. Reticent but bright nose hints at licorice, violet, faded rose and bitter chocolate. Densely packed but very tight, with intense blueberry and bitter chocolate flavors accented by a cool menthol quality. The serious, firm-edged tannins will need a good decade to unwind. STEPHEN TANZER
