From Russian River Valley in Sonoma County. This is in a style the antithesis of the bombastic pinot noirs that have been celebrated by many. Indeed, it is so light it’s verging on heavy rose, but of course, with more finesse. Proprietor/winemaker Nick Maloney spends a lot of time working in Burgundy, when not working on these Father John wines in California. Feels like very low new oak input too here.

Red cherries, watermelon, new leather, wet slate, faint tobacco. Fragrant start. Decidedly light bodied, just cherry flavoured with licks of cream and gentle-sweet spice. Rolls across the palate effortlessly, clings with delicate and pretty fruit sweetness, finishes with a little powdered rock-like minerality. It’s just lovely. Beautiful, subtle, gorgeous drinking here. MIKE BENNIE www.winefront.com.au
