The 2016 Kali Riza Xinomavro "Vielles Vignes" is a Xinomavaro aged for 14 months in used, mostly (90%) French oak. It comes in at just 11.5% alcohol. Sourced from vines never affected by phylloxera and ranging from 40 to nearly 100 years of age, this is all about its terroir. It seems pretty brilliant for the price point, one of the better examples from Amyndeon that I've seen from this Naoussa-based producer. The region is famous for acidity and so is the grape. You can guess what that means. Crisp, nervy and tense, this also has a fairly serious backbone that makes it quite backward and a little rustic. If finishes with earthy flavors that made me think "old-school Barbaresco." Just for fun, I held it open for a few more hours. It came around surprisingly well, showing far more expressive fruit and seeming a little more seductive. That doesn't mean you should plunge in now. This is an extremely nice value if you like the style—and have patience. It should age beautifully, but it needs 4-6 years in the cellar. Let's be a little conservative at the moment and start here in aging potential and in score. It may wind up doing better in both. MARK SQUIRES, erobertparker.com
