Another terrific 2013 that might be a candidate for the wine of the vintage, Stephane’s 2013 Côte Rôtie Cuvee Belle Helene has a serious, backward feel to go with notions of liquid smoke, pepper, crushed rock, iron and ample dark fruit. Inky colored, full-bodied, concentrated and structured, it’s certainly not for those seeking instant gratification and will need 7-8 years or cellaring. This cuvee comes from the oldest vines of the estate, which are located just above the vines used for the Lancement cuvee. Despite the proximity, the two cuvees couldn’t be more different. (made with 50% whole clusters and aged for 18 months in 50% new oak): Glass-staining ruby. Heady, mineral-tinged aromas of blueberry, cherry liqueur, licorice pastille and incense carry an emphatic floral overtone. At once weighty and energetic, offering deeply concentrated dark fruit preserve flavors and hints of candied violet and allspice. Shows outstanding depth as well as vivacity, finishing sweet, seamless and extremely long; a bright mineral note adds lift and cut. (95) JOSH RAYNOLDS
