"A sangiovese made with a European sensibility aiming for overall savouriness, smelling and tasting of soil: undergrowth, fungal, wild herbs, mint, wild spice drawn together tightly with minerality. A meat lover's wine." JENI PORT, The Age, Epicure

Very good intensity, with lots of spice (pepper) and fresh green notes(mint) followed by the fruit (strawberry) and some floral nuances (iris) and also roots. After aeration we can find some more mineral notes coupled with more fruit (raspberry). The freshness of the odours clearly gives an impression of youth. Attack is soft and the volume of the wine is medium, followed by the presence of tannin, which are fine and melting. The structure of the wine is balanced by  some fruity aromatics (strawberry jam) and a gentle acidity. The aromas keep developing towards spice (cinnamon) and a touch of gentle oak. The texture gives the length  to the wine.

2009 was a good vintage for sangiovese, and needed very little extra to compliment the wine. The fruit of syrah combined with structure of cabernet completes the picture. The wine is in the line of previous vintage with more elegance, and also a more herbal profile at this stage. The mouth is quite different to the nose , probably indicating  a need for bottle maturation. Food match: small game (partridge, hare), or guinea fowl.  GILLES LAPALUS, Wine Maker, Sutton Grange
