Airlie Bank Cabernet Franc 2018 Offer / Australia
Sometimes I have to wonder why certain wines or wineries keep featuring in the top class in certain categories for me. Maybe I am biased? Perhaps I favour certain peoples styles? I don’t think so but then how would I know. So it’s always nice to see the wider wine community agreeing with what we think when we taste things and love them.
There is a reason that this little Cab Franc from the Yarra keeps popping up in the PWS best value offerings, it is insanely good and remarkably good value with a consistent track record in recent years for more than overdelivering on quality verse hip pocket damage. Tim Shand just seems to have a knack for making sensational booze at all price points, it’s a talent that should be celebrated.
With all that being said this wine is a brilliantly gulpable expression of what Alex Wilcox reckons is Australia’s next big deal in red wines, Cabernet Franc. Wonderfully varietal with all those brambly fruits, leafy notes (in the best possible way), graphite and crunchy acidity. If a bottle of this gets opened I promise you there will be none left. It’s only issue is that it’s too delicious and encourages reckless drinking.
Nice to see that Matt Jukes put it in his Top 100 Aussie Wines Of The Year. Wines of this calibre at this price should be celebrated.
