Allies and Precipice Tasting
Both Dave Chapman and Marty Singh began to produce wine after long careers on the other side of the fence working in restaurants and sales in the industry so I can sympathise with the styles of they make. Both produce wines of finesse which focus on a combination of vineyard site and varietal expression. Dave works on the Mornington Peninsula across a number of sites in Balnarring, Merricks and Tuerong and the difference in vineyard expression is apparent in his Pinots. Marty make absolutely cracking Chardonnay off the Willow Lake Vineyard and a delicious and spicy Shiraz from the Hyde Park Vineyard.
These are the kinds of wine I like to drink: subtle variation in flavours and structure and pair well with food. Not so long ago these would have been considered ‘new wave’, but now are excellent examples of small quality production in the modern Australian wine landscape – it is small producers like these that have changed Australian wine for the better.
