An Egly Ouriet Supper 2018

Egly-Ouriet is one of the reference-point growers in Champagne, with a deep selection of wines that offer remarkable transparency to site, vintage and variety… These are among the most pure, unmanipulated Champagnes readers will come across, and the estate’s new releases are all highly recommended.

This is a very strong set of new releases from Francis Egly. It’s easy in this range to focus on the higher-end wines, and that is certainly understandable given their quality, but this year I was quite taken by the NV Brut Tradition and NV Brut Rosé Grand Cru, which benefit from the richness of the 2012 vintage that is at the heart of both wines. As I have noted in previous reports, the Egly-Ouriet Champagnes are rich and vinous in style, but done with an approach that offers more freshness than in the past. ANTONIO GALLONI, The Wine Advocate

Last night we held an Egly-Ouriet Supper with Rob Walters and the newly arrive wines. I feel I speak for everyone when I say it was a relaxed and enlightening event and the perfect way to finish the Champagne Season. The wines, from my perspective, incredible: they lacked for nothing and provided an abundance of Egly-Ouriet’s trademark minerality and finesse, married with richness and power. The event confirmed that Egly is possibly my favourite grower Champagne house. Francois Egly walks a fine line between vinous expressions of wine with bubbles and Champagne as we know it.

For the group the wine of the night was the Egly Ouriet Blanc de Noirs VV NV. This is a remarkable wine of depth, power and finesse. As it warmed in the glass it opened into a rich expression of Pinot Noir fruit and worked perfectly with the Quail dish from the kitchen. Both the Egly-Ouriet Brut Tradition NV and Les Vignes de Vrigny NV showed particularly well in their current bottlings.

Indeed, one of the general comments of the evening from the group was how suited the wines were to richer food. There is no need to drink Egly as an aperitif, they are perfect for game and chicken dishes.

On a personal note my wine of the night was the Egly Rose Grand Cru NV. This is by far my favourite Rose Champagne (I drink this every year on my birthday) – it always expresses the beauty of a delicate rose, yet seems to contain a sense of power and vinous quality akin to good Burgundy. As a non-vintage wine, it never disappoints. The current base for the wine is 2012 – an incredible vintage for Champagne and the best since 2008. Buy up and drink.

One final word on disgorgement dates and bottlings. Egly was one of the first to pioneer the practice of stating base vintages and disgorgement dates. This is a new shipment of Egly where the base wines all come from excellent to outstanding vintages. We have limited stock of this fresh shipment.

I have listed the wines below with the current disgorgements. Please note we will need to order the wines and our allocation is limited.
