Bernard Moreau 2017

This small family-run domaine continues to be one of the most exciting addresses in the Cote de Beaune. From top to bottom, this is an impressive range. ANTONIO GALLONI

Readers will already be aware that I revere Alex Moreau as one of the best winemakers in Chassagne-Montrachet, and it is pleasing to see that his reputation is increasing each year—from the United States to London to Hong Kong. This was a superb set of wines from Alex. NEAL MARTIN

Every year Roscoe makes sure that we get our allocation of Bernard Moreau. He’s relentless that way. And we’re forever grateful, particularly in a nervy, crystalline vintage like 2017 which strikes a wonderful resonance into the Moreau families solidly built but nuanced whites.

Today Alex and Benoit Moreau farm 14Ha of vineyards, 9 of which they own. The winery itself is based centrally in Chassagne-Montrachet. Benoit looks after the vineyards which sees no herbicides or pesticides, instead only organic fertilisers are applied. Alex heads up the winery team. where the approach is similarly simple. Fermentation is initiated with indigenous yeasts and very minimal lees stirring utilised if needed. In general, no more than 30% new wood for both 1er and Grand Cru’s.

These wines have now landed and will be the last chance to get your hands on them. Whilst the village, 1er & GC wines are built to age, the 17’s will also be great additions to the table this festive season. Just be sure to give them time to breath if you do.
