Bordeaux 2015 New Arrivals 2018 SYDNEY
So the 2015 Bordeaux is finally here and we can all see for ourselves what the hype is all about. For the last five years the wines and region have been more visible in media and documentaries than in the market itself and following a string of difficult vintages 2015 produced brilliant wines. We’ve seen a number of petite Chateaux over the last few weeks and the overall quality of the wines is fantastic.
An exhaustive account of the vintage has been written elsewhere, but a few important points bare repeating. Unusually this is an excellent vintage for both the right and left banks, with properties on both sides of the river enjoying excellent vintage conditions – particularly Pomerol, Saint Emilion, Margaux and Pessacc-Leognan. Secondly, the quality of the wines produced extends throughout the hierarchy of appellations, with lesser estates and petite Chateaux producing delicious and affordable wines that will drink well out of the gate and cellar in the short to mid-term, though this may be attributed to technological advances in wine making. Many smaller estates have enjoyed new life under the work of more prestigious owners or consulting winemakers. The top properties have always had the aristocratic privileged of terroir. Thirdly there has been a marked change in the style of wine being produced, most notably the lessening of new oak in wine making and also the emphasis on freshness in the wines. Whether the Bordealise are responding to market demand, or the vintage, and likely a combination of both, the resulting wines are a different animal to those produced a decade ago…
