Cantine Pra Monte Grande and Otto 2018 Offer
The Soaves are generally tense wines of structure and energy. Within the context of Veneto wines, Prà remains under the radar and deserving of wider recognition. ANTONIO GALLONI
Graziano Prà’s wines offer possibly the best example of what the terroir of Monteforte d’Alpone can deliver. The highly black volcanic soils give wines that are mineral yet powerful, but Prà is especially adept at ensuring the wines also showcase a remarkable degree of finesse.
In my opinion one of Veneto’s two best Soave producers IAN D’AGATA, Vinous 2019
Prà does so many things well it’s hard to know where to start. I can’t think of too many wineries in Veneto that excel to this degree. ANTONIO GALLONI
Obviously Covid has gotten in the way of a lot of reviewers travelling and tasting but I think it is fair to say, judging by the review for the Otto, that the press for the Monte Grande, when it arrives, will be glowing. Certainly it has the track record for that kind of press and the 18s are fantastic. For now, I hope you trust me when I say it is a ripping example of a style that is synonymous with this producer. A terrific rendition of one of the region’s top wines and one of Italy’s most remarkable whites.
While the focus today is on the release of the Monte Grande I have included the Otto again because of the gargantuan response we had when we offered it out last time. This will give anyone who didn’t get to try any an opportunity to pick up one of the best value whites of the year so far and for anyone, who like me, has drunk theirs already you can restock at the same great price.
Both of these wines are deserving of your attention but are very different in style. The Otto, which many of you would have tried, is more lively and light on its feet, providing a wonderfully refreshing version of Pra that suits so many situations and is incredible value. The Monte Grande is a more viscous and powerful white that is undeniably one of Soave’s most exciting wines to drink. I think that being able to buy a reference point example for $35 a bottle is a remarkable deal.
