Cirillo 2017 Vincent Grenache
The Cirillo family is in possession of the oldest productive grenache vineyard on the planet, planted in 1850, and since they bought it in 1969 nobody has been allowed to prune it apart from the present custodian, Marco, and his father, Vincent. It’s a special place producing a special wine. NICK RYAN, The Australian
This is one very, very old plot of grenache on sandy soils in the heart of the Vine Vale district of the Barossa Valley. Cirillo has meticulously hand-reared these ancient beauties to deliver an immensely powerful, age-worthy expression of grenache. NICK STOCK, jamessuckling.com
Marco Cirillo’s story is one that I think a lot of consumers already know but that we still think is worth sharing. Marco’s family acquired a parcel of Grenache and Semillon in the early 70s in the Light Pass district of the Barossa. The vineyard is holds the oldest Grenache vines on the planet. Planted free draining, deep silt over limestone and clay soils the site is renowned for producing some of Australia’s most sought after Grenache fruit. Much of it is sold to the likes of Torbreck but Marco keeps a small portion every year for himself and has been fashioning a few remarkable wines from this truly special and unique patch of dirt for years now. While we love all of these wines we are consistently drawn to the Vincent and here at PWS HQ we regard this wine as one of the worlds greatest value reds.
From vines planted in 1901 and 1906 and as Marco said “the vines know what to do now, they always crop low and basically look after themselves”. This years Vincent stands out for its freshness of fruit and poise, it’s buoyant and refreshing but do not be fooled the quality of fruit here is exceptional and no wine at this price has the right to be this bloody good.
You don’t have to be a Grenache nut to dig this wine. All that is required to love the 2017 Vincent is that you enjoy wine. I legitimately don’t think anyone who likes a glass (or five) of good red wouldn’t love this. To help you along the path towards deliciousness we are offering the Vincent at a whopping 25% discount in straight dozens making this already brilliant value wine unmissably cheap.
