Clonakilla Ripper Releases Syrah 2016 & Hilltops 2017
What does it take to produce and icon wine? The simple answer once you peel back all the layers of marketing is you need a special patch of dirt, good viticulture and nuanced winemaking. The monika can also communicate a sense of being “once great” and living “off the proceeds” and under the shadow of past glories.
I don’t think any of the wines from Clonakilla fit the above definition but they certainly are icons: Tim Kirk has virtually singlehandedly stamped the Canberra district with his cool climate Shiraz Viognier and the small batch Syrahs. This is an absolutely ripping set of new releases we are offering: one of the best vintages of Hilltops we have tasted in recent memory and the Clonakilla Syrah 2016 (so far reserved for the cellar door) has been released to PWS. Tim believes this is the best wine he has ever made. The reviews are effusive. As Campbell Mattinson says: Buy!
