Collector Marked Tree Shiraz 2015
Another year, another Marked Tree Shiraz from Collector wines. WRONG! It’s not just another year. This vintage was awarded 10/10 by Halliday – the highest scoring vintage for the region in decades! Winemaker, Alex McKay has claimed it’s a vintage that will be remembered as one of the best in recent history.
The 2015 Marked Tree Shiraz was the cherry on the cake – completing a perfect suite of three flawless wines from three exceptional vintages (the other two being 2005 and 2009) in the Canberra district and winning the ‘Red Wine of Provenance Trophy’ at the 2016 National Wine Show of Australia. The trophy is only awarded to outstanding Australian wines that have shown consistency of style and quality over many years and it’s no surprise to me that Alex pulled this off. The wine also recently just won a gold medal at the 2017 NSW Wine Awards.
Previously, Alex has added a touch of Viognier to this wine to spruce it up a little, but this year there was no need as the quality of the fruit was sublime and I can confirm that this is 100% true blue Shiraz grapes. This wine never disappoints but the best part is the price tag. I’m absolutely baffled as to how such a strong, vivacious, and high-quality wine could be so affordable! I’m definitely not complaining though. Do yourself a favour and buy up on this one – drink now or cellar it. This wine has a sturdy spine and will indeed age gracefully.
