Dry River New Releases 2018
Extremely low yields, non-irrigated vines, innovative vineyard techniques (such as the use of reflective foil to optimize the grapes’ exposure to sunlight) and a desire to make long-lived wines have earned Dry River a reputation for being one of New Zealand’s leading premium-wine producers. BOB CAMPBELL MW
Dry River is one of the iconic New Zealand producers, its modern era commencing in 1979 when Neil and Dawn McCallum planted their first vines in the gravelly “Martinborough Terrace,” NEAL MARTIN
Dry River has developed a strong reputation as one of New Zealand’s most iconic pioneering wineries. The small region of Martinborough located on the southern tip of the north island, often gets overlooked when discussing New Zealand wine, in particular Pinot Noir, since the more globally recognised region of Central Otago seems to reign supreme in this department. It is not true, however – thou shall not doubt the power of the Martinborough. While Central Otago is home to some of the greatest Pinot Noirs in the world, there are a few absolute stand-outs in the Martinborough that must not be ignored. Dry River is at the top of the tree perched next to Martinborough Vineyards and Ata Rangi, producing some of the greatest wines in New Zealand. The regions’ vines also have a bit more age on them and this is a factor that is undeniably conducive of the flourishing nature of the wines we’re seeing nowadays.
We’ve always loved Dry River’s wines, in particular the Pinot Noir which is one of NZ’s most iconic Pinot’s and the Pinot Gris (which, might I add is one of the best Pinot Gris in the Southern Hemisphere), but the region is also extremely well-suited to Riesling and this year we have decided to also offer out the Craighall Riesling as it has had a significant amount of praise from the press and is always a knock-out wine.
The wines have just received raving reviews from Bob Campbell (MW). As Bob mentions, all the wines have impeccable ageing abilities and while they are scrumptious as they are now, it’s worth putting them down for a few years. If you have not yet been exposed to the sheer excellence that these wines exhibit, please do. You won’t regret it.
We are offering these wines at a very special 20% discount which I suspect at these prices, the wines will fly out the door.
