Eva Fricke 2017 Release

I think I have to open this offer with something like “trust me you want these. I mean you really, really want these”. Some of you may remember my enthusiasm for these wines when the previous vintage arrived in Australia, the first time this new super stars offerings have hit our shores and I am just as taken with her new releases. For those unfamiliar with the estate, Eva Fricke made herself known when she began purchasing old, mismanaged, vineyards in the Rheingau’s Lorcher. Generally this area was regarded as second rate territory but Eva was adamant that the wines being produced there did not reflect the inherent quality of the sites and was more a product of second rate winemakers. Having already established a reputation in Germany for the wines she was producing at Leitz (one of my favourite domaines during her reign) many of her colleagues told her she was crazy to invest there and that the wines would never work. How wrong they were and as she mentioned in a recent interview with David Schildknect on Vinous Media “those very same colleagues are trying to buy land there!” which many of the good and great of Rheingau are indeed doing on the back of the raging success of her wines.

Some of you may be aware that in 2017 much of Germany received the unwanted Cote de Beaune treatment and was hammered with hail and frosts and yields were utterly decimated. The only silver lining to this rather abysmal cloud is that the wines are super, the lower yields have given them a good degree more flesh, intensity and the thicker skins have resulted in tremendous phenolics and dry extract. I have to say this is a bracket of impressive Rieslings even by Eva Fricke’s standards.

Right now the wines are perhaps more impressive than they are engaging but I think six-twelve months in bottle will start to bring the elements together and even the regular Trocken is structured and powerful enough that it will develop well over some years. At the risk of sounding like a broken record here I really do think every Riesling fan, which you clearly are if you are getting this email, will want to have these in their stash.
