FIVE STARS – JAMES HALLIDAY
All the wines are exceptional. JAMES HALLIDAY James Halliday, The Australia
the consistency in quality terms is remarkable. We have a top-notch producer on our hands here. CAMPBELL MATTINSON
I know that Mornington has been a wine region that has had some great attention for quite a while now but it really feels like there was really only a few producers down there who deserved all the chatter until recently. In the last five plus years a new breed seems to have emerged and taken the region by the reins, steering it towards bigger and better things.
As is usually the case with situations like this it is the young-ish crew who are heading up the charge and dragging everyone else with them. Barney Flanders is certainly one of the young (only by winemaking standards) crew heading the charge. It feels like every new release from him contains another little surprise, a touch more, a new aspect or dimension to his wines. I don’t know if it is a product of the vines he is sourcing fruit from or if he is becoming more in tune with sites and his understanding of what is required to coax more out of them every year is growing or if my memory is fading and they have always been this good. It is probably a mix of all of the above. Certainly the press and his show results at Mornington stand as testament to his success and talent and once again his new releases are captivating.
While there are no reviews out for the wines as yet you only need to look at his track record, take in to account that 2017 is one of the best vintages in a goodly while and also trust me a little (the last bit may be hard to swallow) to know these are a no brainer. Both are banging and I think great value.
