Giant Steps Dual Trophies Offer 2019
The Giant Steps single vineyard wines have slipped into the realms of Most Anticipated Releases of the Year. CAMPBELL MATTINSON, The Wine Front
The focus on the high quality, single vineyard…. wines in what is demonstrably a very distinguished portfolio. JAMES HALLIDAY
Flamsteed’s touch is seen in an impressive tally of outstanding quality wines. He has oscillated from household names to cult wines, plus one vermouth. Boundless energy, an eye for detail and winemaking nous are inherent.
But it’s Flamsteed’s work at Giant Steps that is his ultimate triumph.
It’s a public outing of a modest, intelligent, quiet revolutionary who has captured our hearts and minds with his exceptional winemaking, but who is also the embodiment of the ultimate wine all-rounder. We’re lucky to have him and his wines. MIKE BENNIE, Gourmet Traveller 2016 Winemaker of the Year
It will probably come as little surprise to most that Giant Steps cleaned up in the Yarra Valley Wine Show this year taking out the Most Successful Exhibitor, the second year in a row in what is arguably the most important small show in the country. Along with all the usual suspects it was great to see that a wine I have long loved from them garnered another trophy, Harry’s Monster Cabernet blend got the gong for Best Cabernet and Blends in Show outclassing some of the Valley’s more prominent names.
Their Tarraford Vineyard Syrah also picked up the gong for Best Shiraz in Show. I know we have been saying it for a long time and some of you may get sick of hearing it but here it is again, Steve Flamsteed is one of the most gifted winemakers in Australia today. He has picked up every award I can think of and more medals at key shows than I can keep track of.
2018 was a great vintage for these styles in the Yarra with a lot of producers extremely excited about the Cabernet and Syrah fruit they had come in. I think Harry’s pulls in the best of all the bits I love about Yarra Cabernet. There is a richness and plump feel to the fruit which caresses as it flows across the palate and has all those cool climate aromatics. The tannins are perfectly shaped and offer a gently supportive structure. It is a model of finessed power and an exemplar of modern Australian Cabernet which clearly demonstrates why the Valley is so suited to these wines.
They Syrah is once again a gem in the GS range, Flammo has a real knack for cool climate Syrah, he always seems to find beautiful texture and the 2018 Tarraford is sensational.
I know that the general thoughts are that the Yarra is Pinot and Chardonnay country but I would like to point out that the most famous and important wines from the region are in fact its Cabernets eg Mt Mary, Yarra Yering, Yeringberg and Wantirna Estate. I would also note that Syrah is perhaps leading the way there for reds at the moment with more and more brilliant examples coming online and Giant Steps is one of the greats and a fraction of the price of some of the others.
Another feather in the cap for the guys in Healesville and very well deserved. Well played gang and congratulations from all of us.
