Great Value NZ Pinot Noir 2017
While New Zealand attained fame (infamy?) for their bargain basement Sauvignon Blanc in the 1990s and 2000s, the rise of Pinot Noir followed a different path: Pinot in NZ began as a premium wine, and for some time bottles that could compete with our domestic Pinot in price and quality, while reflecting the specifics of the unique NZ climate were scarce. Not so any longer. We’ve seen a number of great little wines which carry the NZ style of slightly more robust pinot, with plenty of varietal character through the store recently and this tasting highlight some of the better wines we’ve seen. 2015 (and now 2016) is a ripper in NZ and these are delicious wines any Pinot drinker would be happy to have on the table.
