Guigal 2015 Vignes de lHospice
Lastly, and from vintage described by Marcel as the best of his lifetime (how’s that for perspective?), the 2015s are inky and primordial, with mind-boggling depth and density. These will be reviewed two to three more times before release, but start saving today! JEB DUNNUCK
As for 2015, Guigal describes it as “a monument” that has few peers in recent times. “It needs to be spoken of in the same terms as 1978, 1985 and 1991, for sure,” he said, adding that he thinks the wines are destined to live an extremely long time without ever seriously closing down “because the harmony of fruit and tannins is perfect. It really has everything.” JOSH RAYNOLDS, Vinous
2015 will go down in history as one of the greatest vintages in recent years in the Northern Rhone (possibly matched by their 2016 counterparts). They are marked by deeply pitched fruit and perfectly ripened phenolics. These are wines for people who love the Rhone and want to cellar them to their full potential.
Furthermore, while Guigal is a household name, justifiably regarded as one of the greatest producers of wine anywhere, people tend to look to either their entry level wines for the brilliant value or their La Las because of the hype and awe surrounding them. In the echelon of single site Syrah, they have few, if any, rivals. After many years of tasting and drinking these wines the one that stands out the most is the Vignes de l’Hospice. It makes its mark not just for the sheer quality, but also for the price. The l’Hospice is a fraction of the astronomical prices of the La Las and often approaches similar quality levels. Its hallmark is the plushness of fruit and riveting energy. Approachable young but capable of ageing and improving gracefully over many decades. In short, the complete package for any collector or consumer.
The 2015 has been called “The most impressive vintage of this wine I can recall tasting” by Joe Czerwinski, The Wine Advocate’s resident Rhone expert. By all accounts that seems to be a fair call as the press from all and sundry is nothing short of glowing.
We are offering this first to our loyal VIPs as the demand for all of Guigal’s 2015s will sadly drastically outstrip supply. We are also offering it with a 20% discount in straight six packs.
