Guigal Cotes-du-Rhone 2015 - FINALLY
I have almost unlimited admiration for the Guigals and their ability to produce millions of bottles of inexpensive Cotes du Rhones that are among the finest of the entire Rhone Valley… ROBERT PARKER
The 2015 Guigal Cotes-du-Rhone is finally here! We’ve been awaiting it’s arrival with eager anticipation and it delivers! This is one of the best value wines on the planet and perfect BBQ drinking. The 2015 is a superstar wine from a great vintage. This has over-delivered with plenty of bright and energetic fruit and a balance of tannin which will reward those who pull the cork and drink now and those with the patience to cellar the it for a few years.
2015, Guigal describes it as “a monument” that has few peers in recent times. “It needs to be spoken of in the same terms as 1978, 1985 and 1991, for sure,” he said, adding that he thinks the wines are destined to live an extremely long time without ever seriously closing down “because the harmony of fruit and tannins is perfect. It really has everything.” JOSH RAYNOLDS, Vinous Media
Philippe Guigal is insistent this is the most important wine the Guigals produce. He argues this wine (bottling) is their cheapest and most accessible and speaks loudly about Guigal’s dedication to making great wines at various levels and price points.
This wine has consistently over-delivered for three decades because Marcel Guigal decided in the 1970s to pay double the finder’s fee to the negociants sourcing Cotes du Rhone if they provided higher quality produce. This, combined with the elevage in old oak foudre produces a wine which is simultaneously delicious in its youth and will age gracefully for a decade.
