Hurley 2018 Pinot Release

Meet Kevin Bell and Tricia Byrnes. … One of those real quiet achiever couples that seem to consistently produce some of the country’s finest pinot noir wines, emphatically dedicated to their sites, and yet fly under the radar, for the most part. Terroirists by another name. WINE FRONT

Hurley always en pointe with single vineyard expressions. MIKE BENNIE

The Mornington Peninsula had a vintage set to show special quality and quantity – the best for the past 30 years, comparable to 2004. Need for shoot and bunch thinning and, if done expeditiously, the result was fruit of great purity and quality. JAMES HALLIDAY

This tiny Mornington property has securely set itself up as one of the regions great addresses over the years. They have done so by concentrating entirely on their own vineyards and working with the small, unique plots they have on their property. The sum of all that hard work and focus is that they now understand the individual terroir expressions and how to coax the most from each patch, the results manifest themselves in some of the regions most gorgeously expressive and uniquely different examples of Pinot.

They probably need no introduction to their fans but it is always worth mentioning that their reputation as one of Victoria’s premier small estates is well deserved. They may not be as well known as a number of larger estates in the area but the quality here is always exemplary, the wines always beautifully well defined and wonderfully enticing.

While there may not be any press around the 18s yet I suggest that when the reviews do come they will be glowing, they always are and 2018 is widely regarded as one of the greatest years in the region. I think James Halliday sums it up nicely when he writes “the best for the past 30 years”. It’s the safest bet going around at the moment I think.

It’s no secret how highly the PWS team regard these wines and we have been following them for a long time so every release from Kevin and Tricia is exciting but their 2018 release is perhaps the most exciting in some years.
