Kumeu River 2017 Offer

…a remarkable demonstration of the consistent high quality and striking cool-climate style of this producer. STUART PIGOTT

these are quite brilliant wines. And they offer outstanding value for money. If they were from Burgundy they’d be double the price, and if they were from a fashionable domaine in Burgundy then they’d be four times the price. JOSS FOWLER

Visiting Kumeu Estate is of course formative for the New Zealand wine enthusiast, and an exceptional opportunity to get a feel for history coupled to an arc of increasing quality – this idea extrapolates across the whole of the New Zealand wine community, but its writ large in the vineyards, cellar door, winery and the Brajkovich people of Kumeu… Chardonnay is the life blood of Kumeu. Or so it is written. An almost unswerving quality with distinct sheen and transparency, an able match of gentle winemaking overlay, but a commitment to a ‘house style. MIKE BENNIE, The Wine Front 2018

The most recent vertical tasting of Kumeu River Chardonnay’s has only proven what many already know – Kumeu produces some of the greatest, if not THE greatest Chardonnay’s in NZ.These are not sentiments we would bandy around lightly and after being long term fans its great to see our convictions confirmed. The most recent tasting saw the who’s who of the wine world converge on Farr Vitners offices in London to taste through every vintage of Kumeu’s Estate and single vineyards Chardonnays from 2006 through to 2017. The result a resounding, overwhelming and unsurprising gong for this exceptional Kiwi producer. We are not surprised!

If you are a long standing fan of or a newcomer to these wines the 2017’s are an absolute must. The winemaking, like so many great producers, is realatively simple: all the wines are whole cluster pressed to obtain on the best free run juice, wild yeast fermented, spend around 11 months on lees and the proportion of new oak used is kept in check – around 20% for the estate and 25% for the single vineyards. What makes these wines truly great is not just the spot-on wine-making by owner/winemkaer and Michael Brajkovich MW, but the incredible consistency in quality year in and year out.

The proof is in the product, and Michael Brajkovich’s unflinching commitment to put Kumeu’s wines in a tasting line-up of white Burgundy from top producers has never failed to highlight the superb quality of the wines. Indeed few Burgundians would have such courage, but the result are always the same: the Kumeu release hold a light to the best and most consistent producers in Burgundy and for that matter anywhere in the world. For me these will always be wines that sum up everything that is great about chardonnay – power, elegance, richness and finesse all wrapped together in one prefect little package.
