Latin American Wine Fiesta Sydney 2019
The tapestry of culture, cuisine and (importantly for us) the wine that runs through Latin-America is enthralling. The present story is one of a generational change, in both consumers and producers, something that is mirrored around much of the wine world these days. In the case of Argentina and Chile these "new" wines have come off a wild ride of international & commercial success. These two countries in particular first had their vineyards established by the Spanish in the 16th century and both then had a fast commercial evolution during the 80's & 90's. This history provides a platform of old/mature vines and defined styles in the global conscious. Giving expectations the new guard can subvert to a certain extent. Some Argentinean producers have leant into their modern history by fragmenting the vineyards sites, pealing back the wines to explore more detail and finesse in the sites and glass. Malbec as a grape copes with this beautifully as it can still exude body and generosity at lower alcohols. Others have dug a bit further into the past, in Chile finding old parcels of Carignan, Cinsault and Pais and pursuing a more extreme 'natural' approach.
We're teaming up with importers Denis Roman & Tom Egan who are not only brilliant communicators, but between them they import some of the best and most exciting producers from these two romance-language countries.
In addition we will be looking at a couple of emerging producers from Mexico. Historically they have also been growing and making wine from the 16th century. Viticulturally and geographically, Mexico has more in common with their Northern USA neighbours blending varieties like Cabernet, Zinfandel, Barbera, Petite Syrah and Merlot.
Much like our very successful Greek Wine Fair, we will have some snacks provided on the day.
