Montalto Pennon Hill Chardonnay 2017

Montalto has hit new heights with its wines. JAMES HALLIDAY

Montalto have scorched through the Mornington Peninsula pack in recent years. MIKE BENNIE, The Wine Front

Montalto has been quietly plugging away down in Mornington for years now all the while producing some of this country’s finest examples of Chardonnay. They may not be first and foremost in everyone’s minds when scouring the store’s shelves or restaurant wine lists but if sophisticated and wonderfully exuberant Chard is your deal then they should be. I think no matter which way you look at it these wines they come up trumps. They have been killing it across the wine show system and the critics agree, they are on fire. What’s more is that they are not hitting the price brackets of some of their fellow Morningtonites (is that what you call them?).

This year at the Mornington Wine Show, where they let me help out judging again, these guys cleaned up picking up a numbers of golds and also the big gong (Trophy for the best 2017 Chardonnay) for their Pennon Hill Chardonnay with top gold at 96 points. Three of their 2017 Chards were in the run for the trophy but the Pennon stood above the rest for its electrifying freshness and detail. It is, in short, one hell of a wine. Perhaps the best part of it is that it is cheap, maybe too cheap for a wine this good.

Now, I can completely understand if you don’t trust me so I have included a review from James Halliday’s Wine Companion which I think sums it up nicely.
