Gone are the days of warm climate vs cool climate in Australia – winemakers are now levelling out the playing field in search of balance. Keith and Clare Mugford from Moss Wood are prime examples of this. Moss Wood needs very little introduction, recognised internationally as one of the most iconic wineries in Australia and producer of some of the greatest Cabernet and Chardonnay there is in the country. While these two varieties still reign supreme in Margaret River (and so they should), the region has proven it has much more to offer.

As well as outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, Moss Wood also produces a stunning Pinot Noir which often flies under the radar, but if you are yet to try it, your life is about be enhanced. The grapes are grown on the oldest Pinot Noir vineyard in Margaret River, originally planted by Bill Pannell. There’s no point in comparing it to the likes of Pinots from the Yarra or Mornington as it’s a completely different wine. It has it’s own distinct voice that so perfectly reflects the region’s terroir.
