Ogier La Rosine 2016 Just Landed
Northern Rhône wine lovers with purist leanings will be head over heels with the soon-to-be-released 2016 vintage, which offers an abundance of energetic, well-balanced and generally graceful wines. A number of producers call it a “dream vintage” for the wines’ collective balance, freshness and expression of terroir…. 2016 is a vintage that’s a must-buy for readers who prize Syrah built along pure, graceful, dare I say feminine, lines. Even so, the wines are in no way lacking depth of flavor or structure, which leads me to think that many of the wines will hit their 20th birthday in fine form. JOSH RAYNOLDS, Vinous Media
The ever-restless Stéphane Ogier is making some of the finest wines in the entire Rhône valley, the north as well as the south. Ogier feels that the strength of 2016 “is its expressive minerality and floral character. The wines are extremely elegant and a great contrast to the massiveness of the 2015s”. He thinks his 2016s will be best for drinking “way before the 2015s but that doesn’t mean that they won’t age well. They will, on their balance and energy.” JOSH RAYNOLDS
Over the last decade or so, Stephane Ogier has raised the bar in just about every way possible for his estate in Côte Rôtie. Today, the estate is unquestionably in the top handful of domaines in the Rhône Valley. JEB DUNNUCK, The Wine Advocate
Our recent visit to Ogier was quite something, both for the sheer quality of the wines on offer and the sheer size of the tasting. Stephane remains a bundle of energy and also one of the more generous, affable people in the French wine trade. He took Michael and I through a huge number of components for various things, single sites, barrels and bottles. It was both incredibly informative and a little exhausting.
Stephane continues his relentless drive towards perfectionism and his wines are blindingly good. I genuinely believe he is one of the very few true masters of the region alive today. While his single site and reserve wines deserve the lavish attention they receive the cornerstone of the estate today is the La Rosine, a wine that continues to deliver astounding quality for the price. If you are not familiar with the wine the fruit comes from a plot just outside of the southern limit of Cote Rotie and just before Condrieu, if you have ever been there you will know that is a stones through and only really perceptible to people more familiar with the region than I am. I used to call it a “baby Cote Rotie” but I think in recent years it has outgrown that moniker, has grown in to its own uniquely special offering from Ogier.
As is our usual practice we are offering this wine at a very special six pack price of 20% off. This remains one of the best value wines from France in our mind. Certainly few wines from the Northern Rhone hit this quality level at this price point.
