Franchetti is well-known as the owner of Tuscany’s Tenuta di Trinoro and its famous, large-scaled wines that are much sought after by collectors all over the world. His Sicilian estate, formerly known as Passopisciaro, has done wonders for the Etna denomination and has the merit (along with Benanti , who first attracted attention to the area, and Tenuta delle Terre Nere, who helped further crystallize it later) of having launched Etna’s wines into to the stratosphere. Franchetti started bottling wine on Etna in 2001, then in 2008 started bottling his single contrada wines that were a knockout from day one, it’s safe to say he has never looked back. Andrea Franchetti’s Etna wines have gained something of a cult like following in recent years. His wines from the slopes of Mt Etna have pathed the way for other producers in the region and have shown the wine world that these old vines and previously unheard of varieties are able to produce wines that can stop you in your tracks. The super attractive aromatics and snappy, energetic fruit profiles here can be as beguiling as the great wines of Burgundy or Barolo but they are wildly different and uniquely of their place. They display one of the more profound expressions of terroir you will find anywhere and often demonstrate an almost saline like sense of minerality.
