Passopisciaro Passorosso Etna Rosso 2017 Offer
Franchetti is well-known as the owner of Tuscany’s Tenuta di Trinoro and its famous, large-scaled wines that are much sought after by collectors all over the world. His Sicilian estate, formerly known as Passopisciaro, has done wonders for the Etna denomination and has the merit (along with Benanti , who first attracted attention to the area, and Tenuta delle Terre Nere, who helped further crystallize it later) of having launched Etna’s wines into to the stratosphere. Franchetti started bottling wine on Etna in 2001, then in 2008 started bottling his single contrada wines that were a knockout from day one, it’s safe to say he has never looked back. The wines are sultry, highly perfumed and profound. IAN D’AGATA, Vinous
The return of one of Etna’s greatest examples is always a good day here at PWS. I know we have been beating the Etna Rosso drum pretty hard over recent years and I am aware we are not alone on that front, but there is good reason. The rise, rise and rise of these wines in the last decade or so has been a serious vinous success story. It is one of these situations that really get us excited, not only because the quality of the best offerings but because of the unique expression of these native varieties and crazy, multitudinous terroirs of this active volcano which lend the area so many diverse expressions. Etna has everything to keep you excited, the wines can be majestic and the soil to glass expression can be as profound here as anywhere in the wine growing world and with any variety.
With all that being said every region has to have a star and in Etna that is Passopiscario (worth noting that they are moving away from that name as it is the town the winery is situated in and now they are rebranding with an eponymous label Vini Franchetti). As always their benchmark Etna Rosso is released first before the single Contrada which come later. The wine sells out quickly every year so please get in early to avoid missing out on what is always one of the best value Sicilian wines of the year.
