Southern Rhone 2016 Sydney Tasting
2016 comes after the fantastic 2015 vintage in the southern Rhone and by all
accounts it could be even better. ALEX WILCOX
The Chateauneufs 2016 are quite simply the best wines this region has seen in a very long time. NICK STOCK
The wines in the 2016 tasting in the southern Rhone certainly did not disappoint and the apex moment of power and finesse was everything it had promised to be. The Chateauneufs 2016 are quite simply the best wines this region has seen in a very long time. The overcooked fruit, the excessive extraction and the obsession with excess seem to be over for most producers.
The glory of grenache as an expressive, complex, elegant, enlivening, and powerful platform is back and long may it reign! NICK STOCK, jamessuckling.com
This tasting charts a journey through the Southern Rhone Valley from the basic Cotes du Rhone Grenache blend - still the best value red wine in France - to Chateauneuf du Pape; arguably the greatest expression of Grenache. In between we've selected a wine from satellite appellation Cotes du Vivrais and three Village wines from Lirac, Vacqueras & Gigondas. These villages provide great intensity and power at a fraction of the cost of the Chateauneuf du Pape.
At the Chateauneuf du Pape end we will be tasting wines from Font du Vent (previously Font de Michelle), Pierre Usseglio and the iconic Vieux Telegraphe. Just one bottle of each, so be sure to get in early to taste an incredible vintage from these producers.
2016 is one of the greatest recent vintages in the Southern Rhone and this is a brilliant tasting. We hope you can make it. PWS
