Three Great Producers - Bruno Rocca, Corte Lavel and Von Hovel / Nebbiolo

We are delighted to welcome Luisa Rocca to the store to show the Bruno Rocca wines from Piemonte. Along side this iconic producer we will have two of the most note worth new producers we’ve seen in some time: Von Hovel of the Mosel and Corte Lavel of Valpolicella. This is an outstanding collection of wines each classically styled and superbly representative of their regions. Bruno Rocca remains an icon and industry leader in Barbaresco, Von Hovel farms the Scharzhofberger vineyard, widely regarded as the greatest in the Mosel Valley, and Corte Lavel produces fresh and elegant Amarone.

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is an enigmatic grape variety; capable of greatness but only when the right site and climatic conditions converge. When that happens, as it does in the Piemonte region in Italy's North-West, the wines combine aromatic beauty with power and longevity. Its most famous expression is as the grape behind Barolo and Barbaresco.

In character the wines often have pale ruby colour (the grape has low pigment), complex aromatics ranging from rose petal, fennel, raspberry, plum and mineral (most notably iron). Despite its feminine aromatics the wines at their best house tremendous intensity and depth and persistent tannins seeing them age for decades under correct cellaring conditions.

It's also now being successfully grown in other parts of the world including New Zealand, California and Australia. In the latter case, the best results are coming from the Adelaide Hills, King Valley and Heathcote.
