Tonic Chardonnay 2018 Offer
After I have been extolling the virtues of classic Margaret River Chardonnay for the past fortnight. A lithe, detailed and effortless expression of Chardonnay from the gents at Tonic Wines graced my glass. Is there room for both? Definitely.
Tonic Wines is a small batch project that was kick-started by two friends, Glenn Barry (winemaker) & Dan Coward (wine-communicator with serious nerd credentials). Both met whilst working for larger wine companies and set to scratch an itch of sourcing small parcels of top quality to fruit and them express them in a minimalist way.
A quick flip through reviews starting from their inaugural 2014 vintage shows that these boys knew what they were doing from the get go. Every vintage has been consistently raved about, and this 2018 Adelaide Hills Chardonnay is no different.
The wine for me is finely detailed, subtle and a pleasure to drink. You may not notice the bottle disappear. Although there’s no malo-lactic fermentation on this wine, it does not lean into extreme raciness. Instead billowing flavours of poached poire williams, ginger, citrus and a whiff of honey. The extended contact on skins (pre-ferment) and gross lees (post-ferment) gives it a chewy texture and phenolic grip to maintain your attention.
