Two Icons of The Southern Rhone 2015 Offer
There are striking wines to be had at every price point in 2015, including numerous basic bottlings that deliver exceptional value. The best examples show serious depth along with very good definition and back-end vivacity. At their best – and there are many high points in 2015 – the wines exhibit the classic richness of the region allied to freshness, which will make them appealing to a wide range of Châteauneuf lovers, from those with cool, deep cellars who can be patient to readers with itchy corkscrews and/or a lack of long-term storage options. JOSH RAYNOLDS
Made with whole clusters, fermented and raised entirely in large concrete tanks, the ebullient and ever-curious Laurent Charvin’s wines are always some of the most elegant, highly perfumed and pure wines of the appellation. At the same time they are reliably deep in flavor and balanced to age, despite their suave, upfront appeal. In 2015 Charvin made what might be, for me, perhaps the best wine ever from his family’s nine hectares of vines in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, which he took over in 1990. Well-stored bottles should have no trouble hitting their 25th birthday in fine form. JOSH RAYNOLDS
On Clos de Papes
There’s no question that the quality of Avril’s 2015 is one of the stars of the vintage; it’s a wine that bears comparison to the many superb wines made at this storied domain. JOSH RAYNOLDS
I have to say this offer got me a little excited. I regard both these two producers as iconic and certainly they rest in the inviable position of being at the very top of the quality tree along with Rayas and Marcoux in my mind. 2015 has been touted as a superb vintage and the reviews for both wines highlight that these are two of the super stars of the year and each is one of the benchmark releases from the two estates. Sadly we have very little Clos des Papes to share around but there is a little more Charvin than usual this year which is great.
I can’t recommend either estates enough, having both of them in your cellar should be a no brainer for anyone who loves Chateauneuf du Pape or just great red wine.
