Vasse Felix Heytesbury Chardonnay 2018 Offer

FIVE STARS
Vasse Felix is Margaret River’s founding wine estate, established in 1967 by regional pioneer Dr Tom Cullity. Owned and operated by the Holmes a Court family since 1987, Paul Holmes a Court has brought the focus to Margaret River’s key varieties of cabernet sauvignon and chardonnay. Chief Winemaker Virginia Willcock has energised the winemaking and viticultural team with her no-nonsense approach and fierce commitment to quality. Vasse Felix has four scrupulously managed vineyards throughout Margaret River JAMES HALLIDAY

WA’, as this state is invariably known, may grow less than 5% of the country’s grapes but it produces a very significant proportion of the country’s best wine, entirely in the south-westernmost corner of this vast state. JANCIS ROBINSON MW

Margaret River performed as usual so far as the weather was concerned, with rain heavy in winter (20% above average), below average for spring, and with perfect growing conditions through December and on into late February, with only five days above 30°C. One vigneron reported, ‘Beautiful clarity and purity of fruit; incredibly expressive wines from [their] site; depth and concentration with power, yet elegance and high natural acidity. Epic vintage.’ JAMES HALLIDAY

Former Winemaker of the Year winner Virginia Wilcox has refocused and reinvigorated this iconic Margaret River estate’s wines pushing them to the very pinnacle of quality in the region today for both key varieties, Chardonnay and Cabernet. As good as all the wines here now are, and they really are among the greatest examples coming out of Margs, it is their Heytesbury Chardonnay that, for me, sets the pace of this estate and indeed the region as a whole.

Today Heytesbury is a benchmark for not just quality of the variety here in Australia but it also helps set the tempo for the style of Chardonnay across the country. It is a reference for sophistication and class and stands as testament to the hard work and focus of one our most gifted wine people.

The 2018 is the product of a cooler than average growing season that provided ideal conditions to ripen Chardonnay perfectly. As the press and reviews, of which I included only two, show this is one of those releases of Heytesbury that should be on everyone’s hit list. We are offering the wine with our usual 20% off in six packs and 25% off in straight dozens, the sharpest price, to the best of our knowledge, that you can find for the 2018.
