Way Out West - Sydney Saturday Tasting

It is no secret that I love the wines from Margaret River. Margaret River as a wine region was first formed in 1967. As a young region, it has come a long way and it is now home to 7% of all wine made in Australia. Margaret River is a region of quality – not quantity, and as such, 25% of all premium wines made in Australia comes from Margaret River. The region has made its name producing world class Cabernet and Chardonnay but is also home to the white Bordeaux Blend Sauvignon Blanc/Semillon (colloquially called SBS) and fragrant Shiraz.
This week’s line-up is showcasing the best of Margaret River and we welcome Stuart and Andrew Watson from Woodlands Winery as well as representatives from Voyager Estate and Cullen.

David and Heather Watson were one of the early pioneers in Margaret and started Woodlands in the northern sub-region of Wilyabrup in 1973. They have now handed over the reins to their sons and it’s fair to say that Woodland’s Cabernet’s are in the top echelon of Australian Cabernet Sauvignon. Woodlands are championing Cabernet Franc in the West. We will have all tier Chardonnay and Cabernet blends open on the day.

Cullen Vineyards is located a few minutes’ drive south on Caves Road and need no introduction. Vanya Cullen has continued her family’s legacy of making top class Cabernet and Chardonnay but also pushed the boundaries and moved with the natural movement happening in Australia at the moment. We will have pour well known wines such as the Mangan SBS and Diana Madeline alongside the skin contact white, Amber.

Voyager Estate, founded in 1978, is located in the southern part of Margaret River and owned by the Wright Family. All operations are headed up by Steve James and under his watch, Voyager Estate has moved quickly towards the top. Steve is meticulous in everything he does and under his watch, Voyager has started experimenting with different clones and batch selections. We will be looking at Voyager’s brilliant Chardonnay’s and Cabernet’s but also their juicy SBS and fragrant, elegant Shiraz.
